Yuri Milner Investments: DST Global and Notable Deals

A list of famous companies tells you little about how an investment worked. Yuri Milner’s record is more useful when you separate the investor, the buying entity, and the transaction. His path from physics to internet investing offers lessons in Facebook’s early financing and DST Global’s later deals.
The Background Behind the Investments
Milner graduated in theoretical physics from Moscow State University in 1985 and subsequently worked in physics research. He began studying at Wharton in 1990, then worked at the World Bank in Washington from 1992 to 1995, as his official career timeline records.
His business career included building Mail.ru Group and founding DST Global in 2009 for global internet investments. The two businesses have distinct histories. Facebook’s 2012 listing prospectus identifies Mail.ru Group Limited as the former Digital Sky Technologies Limited. It also records that Mail.ru’s November 2010 restructuring, connected with its London listing, left it no longer affiliated with DST Global Limited and its named affiliates.
That distinction matters when attributing a deal. A transaction by Digital Sky Technologies, a later DST Global investment, and a personal investment by Milner describe different ownership arrangements.
Yuri Milner’s Investments: A Dated Snapshot
These examples show investments associated with Milner’s career at specific points in time. They aren’t a complete portfolio or proof of current ownership, and they don’t identify personal capital behind each deal.
- Facebook, May 26, 2009. Facebook named Digital Sky Technologies, known as DST, as the investor in its original deal announcement.
- Airbnb, Alibaba, Snapchat, and WhatsApp, documented in February 2017. Wharton’s Milner speaker profile named these companies among those DST Global’s portfolio had included. The profile date is separate from each company’s investment date.
- Databricks, December 17, 2024. The company’s Series J announcement named DST Global among the round’s co-leads, without specifying the firm’s individual check size.
The DST Global Strategy and the Facebook Deal
Facebook’s 2009 financing shows how company funding, cash for selling shareholders, and board representation can be negotiated separately.
DST invested $200 million in preferred stock, a share class with rights that differ from common stock, for a 1.96% ownership stake at a $10 billion valuation. Facebook separately said DST planned to offer to buy at least $100 million of existing common shares to provide cash to eligible current and former employees. The announced transaction terms also specified no board seat or special observer rights.
The distinction between the purchases is practical. Buying newly issued shares puts capital into the company. Buying existing shares pays the selling shareholder. The announced employee offer was a separate plan, so its amount shouldn’t be folded into the $200 million company investment.
The board terms also need context. Facebook said they were consistent with its practice for other recent investors. This transaction documents an investment without a board seat; it doesn’t establish that every DST Global deal carried the same terms or that this structure guaranteed better results.
What the Model Says About Investing
For an angel investor, the useful comparison starts with the role you want to play. A board seat brings different responsibilities from a smaller investment alongside a lead investor. An established private company also gives you different evidence to evaluate from a startup still finding its first customers.
At Angel Squad, our angel-investing community, members learn from early-stage deals sourced by Hustle Fund and compare reasoning with peers. Our stage, deal access, and investing experience are different from DST Global’s. The shared work is developing judgment about companies, terms, and risk.

A famous portfolio can make selection look easier in hindsight. Our co-founder Elizabeth Yin puts the portfolio lesson plainly in Democratizing Knowledge: “Don't try to pick a co. Select a portfolio.” Startup investing is risky, and most of your bets may fail or never provide a way to sell. A list of celebrated companies leaves out the losses, holding periods, and capital needed across a portfolio.
Elizabeth also writes in Democratizing Knowledge, “The more disciplined you are in your thought process/rubric, the more you can improve over time.” For a deal like Facebook’s, that means separating the business thesis from the transaction terms: what supports continued growth, where the money goes, and what role the investor takes. Writing down those assumptions creates something concrete to revisit as the business develops.

The Science Side
Milner’s science philanthropy belongs in a separate category from his commercial investments. Yuri and Julia Milner co-founded the Breakthrough Prizes with Sergey Brin, Priscilla Chan, Mark Zuckerberg, and Anne Wojcicki. The organization’s prize and founder details describe $3 million prizes in life sciences, fundamental physics, and mathematics, alongside separate awards for early-career researchers.
The Breakthrough Initiatives programs, co-founded by Julia and Yuri Milner, include Breakthrough Listen and Breakthrough Starshot. Listen launched in 2015 as a $100 million search for evidence of intelligent life beyond Earth. Starshot launched in 2016 as a $100 million research and engineering program toward a proof of concept for light-driven interstellar probes. Those figures describe program commitments, rather than personal equity investments or completed missions.
Tech for Refugees is humanitarian funding, too. Its April 2022 launch announced a $100 million seed-donation pledge from the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, co-founded by Yuri and Julia Milner. The initial work focused largely on people fleeing Ukraine, with a broader refugee-relief purpose. The foundation made the pledge; it wasn’t a DST Global investment round.
What to Watch
New financing announcements can show where DST Global commits capital. Company filings can document ownership and sales at particular dates. The useful distinctions remain the buying entity, the kind of shares purchased, and the date of the transaction. An announcement establishes participation in a deal while leaving later ownership and investor returns unresolved.
